The name, vodka, comes from the Russian phrase zhiznennaia voda, or "water of life". It can be made from everything from potatoes to beets. It's considered to be fairly flavorless which makes it a great liquor for mixed drinks.

vanilla ice cream
4 tablespoons creamy porter or stout beer
fresh raspberries
fresh mint sprig
Scoop enough ice cream into a tall glass to fill it two-thirds full.
Gently pour the porter over the ice cream.
Garnish the drink with fresh raspberries and mint sprigs.

We'll be honest, if you don't like the taste of beer then don't try this recipe. We loved it though - the strong porter gave a great contrast to the sweet ice cream. We used vanilla ice cream made from coconut milk (doesn't have a coconut flavor) but it would be fun to experiment with other flavors (chocolate ice cream anyone?). We served these in small shot glasses.
