The name, vodka, comes from the Russian phrase zhiznennaia voda, or "water of life". It can be made from everything from potatoes to beets. It's considered to be fairly flavorless which makes it a great liquor for mixed drinks.

This versatile recipe can be used as a spread for a sandwich or as a dip for crackers.

2/3 cup mayonnaise
1 tablespoon fresh minced onion
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
1 1/2 tablespoon pickle relish, optional
1 pound smoked ham, coarsely ground
Combine the mayonnaise, onion, garlic powder, mustard, and pickle relish until well mixed. Fold in the ground ham.
Serve immediately or place in a covered container and chill in the refrigerator until ready to use. Store leftovers in the refrigerator.

Pumpkins aren't just for pies or Halloween decorations. These large, orange gourds - while naturally sweet - also work well in savory dishes. They pair well with poultry and pork (and especially bacon) and their creamy-when-cooked texture blends easily into soups.
A can of cream of mushroom soup can be a real dinner saver. It works great in casseroles and can turn into a sauce or gravy in a pinch.
