INGREDIENTS:

1 cup shortening
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1 cup packed light brown sugar
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
2 cups semisweet chocolate chips
1 cup nuts, optional

DIRECTIONS:

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.

In a large bowl, mix together shortening and sugars. Add eggs. Stir in vanilla, baking soda, salt and flour; mix until all flour is worked in. Add chocolate chips and nuts.

Drop by Tablespoonfuls 2 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheets. Bake 12 to 13 minutes, until tops barely begin to brown (this is important). Let rest on cookie sheets a few minutes until firm enough to remove to wire racks to cool.
