Ah, the unassuming envelope of onion soup mix. It's more than just for onion soup (or dip). It adds tremendous flavor (and convenience) in all these recipes.

ingredients
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/3 cup white sugar
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup milk
1/2 cup butter flavored shortening
1 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
3 egg whites, beaten
1/4 cup butter
2 cups confectioners' sugar
2 tablespoons evaporated milk
2 tablespoons hot water
1 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
directions
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease and flour one 13" x 9" inch pan.
Sift the flour, white sugar, baking powder and salt together. Mix in the shortening, milk and vanilla. Beat until well combined. Add the egg whites and beat for 2 minutes.
Pour the batter into the prepared pan. Bake at 350 degrees F for 20 to 25 minutes. Let cool then ice.
For Icing: Melt butter in a saucepan until it begins to brown. Remove from heat and add the confectioners' sugar, evaporated milk or half and half, hot water and 1-1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract.
Beat at medium speed for three minutes. Then pour icing over cake and allow icing to set.
