1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
2 teaspoons salt
1 cup brown sugar
2 sticks cold butter or margarine
1/4 cup cold water, or as needed

directions
Mix all dry ingredients in order listed . Cut in the shortening as for pie pastry. Add enough cold water until a pliable dough consistency.
Roll 1/2 inch thick on a floured surface. Cut into desired shapes. Place on ungreased baking sheets an inch apart. Bake at 400 degrees F until golden, about 20 minutes.
Serve warm with butter and jam. Oatmeal makes these dense and the brown sugar sweet.
