Ingredients:
1/4 cup butter or margarine
2 squares unsweetened chocolate
2 eggs
1 cup sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup chopped walnuts
9 scoops vanilla, banana or peppermint ice cream
4 egg whites
1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar
1/2 cup sugar

Directions:

In a saucepan, combine butter or margarine and chocolate. Stir over low heat until melted; set aside.

Preheat oven to 350F.

In a bowl, beat eggs until light and foamy. Beat in 1 cup sugar, salt and vanilla. Stir in chocolate mixture, then stir in flour. Fold in walnuts. pour into an ungreased 8-inch-square pan. Bake until mixture is set, about 20 minutes. Cool. Cut into squares.

Arrange on a large baking sheet. Top each brownie with a scoop of ice cream. Freeze until ice cream is very firm, 2 to 4 hours.

At serving time, preheat oven to 450F. Heat egg whites with cream of tartar until foamy. Gradually beat in 1/2 cup sugar until stiff and glossy. Quickly spoon meringue over ice cream and brownies, covering completely. Bake until lightly browned, 3 to 4 minutes. Serve immediately.
