Festive Pineapple Bars With Nutty Meringue Topping

ingredients
1 cup shortening
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup brown sugar
3 egg yolks
1 tablespoon cold water
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/8 teaspoon salt
1 can (20 ounce size) crushed pineapple with juice
3/4 cup sugar
4 tablespoons cornstarch
3 egg whites
1 cup brown sugar
1 cup nuts
directions
Cream shortening; add 1/2 cup sugar and 1/2 cup brown sugar; beat well. Blend in egg yolks, add water and vanilla. Add flour and salt. Spread in bottom of greased 9x13 pan.
Cook pineapple, 3/4 cup sugar and cornstarch until thick; cool. Spread over bottom mixture.
Beat egg whites until stiff. Gradually beat in 1 cup brown sugar. Spread over filling. Sprinkle nuts on top and bake at 350 degrees F for 35 minutes.
