Pumpkins aren't just for pies or Halloween decorations. These large, orange gourds - while naturally sweet - also work well in savory dishes. They pair well with poultry and pork (and especially bacon) and their creamy-when-cooked texture blends easily into soups.

ingredients
1 1/4 cup flour
2/3 cup packed brown sugar, divided
3/4 cup butter, softened
1 egg
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 cup mixed nuts
1 1/2 cup candied cherries
1 cup chocolate chips
directions
Combine flour with half of the brown sugar. Cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Press mixture evenly and firmly in bottom of ungreased 12 x 10 inch pan. Bake at 350 degrees F for 15 minutes.
Meanwhile beat egg slightly in a large bowl. Stir in remaining brown sugar and salt. Add nuts, fruit, and chips. Toss to coat.
Spoon mixture evenly over baked layer. Press firmly to adhere layers. Bake an additional 20 minutes.
Cool. Cut into 1 1/2 x 2 inch bars.
