Ingredients:
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 clove garlic -- pressed or minced
1/2 cup onion -- minced
3 cups defatted chicken stock
16 ounces black beans -- canned, undrained
1/8 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
6 ounces crabmeat -- drained
2 tablespoons brandy
Chopped fresh chives -- for garnish

Directions:

Warm the oil in a saucepan over medium heat. Add the garlic and cook just until it starts to sizzle. Add the onion and cook, stirring occasionally, until soft and translucent, 10 to 15 minutes.

Add the stock, the beans and their liquid, and the pepper. Reduce the heat and simmer, uncovered, for 30 minutes.

Pour the mixture into a blender container. Place the lid on the container, leaving it ajar for the hot steam to escape, and blend on high until smooth. Pour through a strainer, pressing the liquid through with the back of a large spoon.

Pour the strained liquid back into the saucepan, add the crabmeat and brandy and mix well. Bring to the desired temperature over medium-low heat before serving. Garnish with chopped chives, if desired.
