
Amish Chocolate Chip Cookies

1/2 cup shortening
1 cup sugar
2 eggs
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
3/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 cup milk
1 package (12 ounce size) chocolate chips or butterscotch chips
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Grease 2 baking sheets.
Place the shortening and sugar in a mixing bowl. Beat on medium speed with an electric mixer until creamed. With the mixer running, add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.
Combine the flour, baking powder, and baking soda in a bowl. With the mixer running, add the milk to the sugar mixture alternately with the flour mixture. Mix well.
Stir in the chocolate chips by hand.
Drop the cookie dough by teaspoonfuls onto the prepared baking sheets. Bake at 400 degrees F for 8 minutes or until the edges start to brown.
Remove from the oven and let cool on the baking sheets for 2-3 minutes then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
Store the cookies in an airtight container. The cookies freeze well.
