Ah, the unassuming envelope of onion soup mix. It's more than just for onion soup (or dip). It adds tremendous flavor (and convenience) in all these recipes.

1 cup butter or margarine (unsalted butter is best)
1/2 cup powdered sugar
2 cups flour, sifted
2 teaspoons vanilla extract

1 1/2 cup chopped nuts
6 ounces bittersweet or semisweet chocolate, melted
2 medium bottles maraschino cherries with stems, (candied cherries will also work)
directions
Cream butter or margarine and sugar until fluffy; add flour, vanilla, and water and mix well. Form individual balls of dough around each cherry. This dough is very soft and easy to work with.
Bake on greased cookies sheet at 350 degrees F for 15 to 20 minutes. Cool on rack, then dip bottom of cookie into melted chocolate, then nuts. Let set on paper lined trays.

This recipe sounds great and easy. But I dont like cherries. Would it still be good if I replaced cherries by any round like nut? Like hazelnut or Chestnut?

i've made these since i was a kid, they're delicious and fun to make. i use the jiffy pie crust mix though, and instead of dipping them in chocolate, i roll them in a bowl of powdered sugar while they're still warm.
