Rice
Rice is consumed more than any other food in the world which makes sense since it dates back to at least 5,000BC. Rice comes in a variety of types. Brown rice has only the outer husk removed and requires a longer cooking time than white rice. White rice has had the husk, bran, and germ removed. Wild rice isn't actually in the same plant family as other rice, but it is similar in how it is cooked. Within the various rice types there are subtypes like arborio, jasmine, and basmati that fall into classes of short, long and medium grains. Each rice has its "best" use so when a recipe recommends a certain type you'll get the best results by following those instructions.
