Traditionally the butterscotch flavor comes from a combination of brown sugar and butter. It's one of our more popular frosting flavors. Some of these recipes cheat a little and use butterscotch flavored chips as the primary flavor source. Some of the versions below are the boiled type of frosting while others mix powdered (confectioners') sugar in to make the mixture thick. These frostings are great on both cakes and cupcakes.
